How to Clean Eyelash Extensions

Why clean lashes matter

One of the most common lash aftercare mistakes is treating extensions as if they cannot be touched. They can — and they should be cleaned.

Daily cleansing removes makeup, skincare, natural oils and anything else that settles around the lash line. It helps the set stay fresh and makes the eye area easier for your lash artist to work on at your next appointment.

A simple daily routine

  1. Remove eye makeup gently, using an oil-free product.
  2. Wet the lashes with clean, lukewarm water.
  3. Apply a lash-safe cleanser with a soft brush or clean fingertips.
  4. Move gently from the lash line towards the tips. Do not scrub from side to side.
  5. Rinse until the cleanser is gone.
  6. Pat the eye area dry with a soft, clean towel. A cool, low setting can help if you need to dry the lashes.
  7. Once dry, brush the extensions lightly with a clean spoolie.

Cleanse at least once a day, and after heavy exercise or makeup if needed. The right frequency depends on your skin, lifestyle and products, but avoiding cleansing is not a retention strategy.

Can you get lash extensions wet?

Yes. At The Lash Spa, we use an Australian-made adhesive from a specialist manufacturer, prepare the natural lashes with a pH balancer and seal the adhesive immediately with SuperBonder from the same manufacturer.

You do not need to keep the extensions dry for 24–48 hours after application. You can go to the gym, beach or other wet activities after your appointment. Keep cleansing gentle, avoid extreme heat and do not rub the lashes.

What not to use

Keep oil away from the lash line. Oil-based makeup removers, cleansers, moisturisers and serums can affect the adhesive and lead to uneven retention.

Waterproof mascara is also best avoided. It tends to need more rubbing to remove, which can pull on the extensions and your natural lashes.

When to ask your artist

Do not pick at a loose extension, pull out a cluster or scrub the lash line. Do not use cotton buds that catch on the fibres. If an extension is twisting, scratching or causing discomfort, contact your lash artist for advice.
